Evan and Caris St. John own a beach house on isolated Daufuskie Island off the South Carolina coast. After a hurricane strikes the island, Caris and their three children, Katie, Abby, and Will, discover a mysterious treasure chest in its wake. Unbeknownst to them, the chest has been sealed for nearly a century and a half. A mysterious Gullah woman rumored to be a witch predicted decades earlier that the family would break the seal and awaken the magic inside. The unbelievable begins to happen.

Through a sudden turn of events, the St. Johns find themselves whisked away on a desperate quest through time and space to reunite their family. Along the way, they must survive a brutal plantation overseer, the Confederate Army fleeing Sherman’s March to the Sea, and one man lost in time who seeks to change his future and the course of history as we know it . . .

Everything now hinges on the actions they take in the present, as well as the actions they have already taken in the past, on Daufuskie Island.

John Lueder is an attorney. Attorneys have to think through many complex issues as part of their job. I was truly entertained to read all the different paths John took me down to arrive at the conclusion and tie the details all together. This was truly well worth my time. I hope this makes it to the big screen.

Daufuskie Island edition by John Lueder Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It is a good "beach read" and contains a lot of actual history. I found it interesting although I thought it was geared more toward teens or young adults when I started it. Actually enjoyed the subject and the pace of the story.
I have to admit that Daufuskie Island grabbed my attention from the start and would not let me go until I finished. I would plan to read 1-2 chapters each night before bed, however once I would dig in, this book grabbed a hold of me and would not let go. From the family dynamics (which I am sure many people can relate to), to the characters very believable reactions to their EXTREME circumstances, this novel had me on the edge of my seat many nights. The author did a wonderful job of walking a thin line between reality and fictional material and in the end, it came together quite beautifully having me yearn for more.
I hope there is another adventure in store for the St. John Family as I know I would be first in line to order myself a copy of your next book.
I read this book in three sittings. I am not usually a reader of books with "magic" twists, so when one of the girls started flying, I put the book down. I didn't think I was interested. The second time I put the book down involved my reflections about the misfortune of my enslaved ancestors, many of whom were forced to endure overseers who were also sadists. But I found myself picking up the book again, after a while. The last reading was satisfying, and I like the way all of the loose ends were tied up. Despite my hesitance to continue at points, I enjoyed this read!
Amateurish writing style with flat one-dimensional characters, and awkward dialogue. The fantasy storyline might appeal to some readers aged 7-11 especially if they are familiar with the Daufuskie/Hilton Head/Savannah area but this is not a book many adult readers would enjoy. The author did make a laudable attempt to weave historical facts into his story but the history came off as forced and had an off-putting lecturing quality to it.
This light-hearted beach read is like no other and is well suited for almost any age. It is wrapped in magic and interwoven with nuggets of history, making it delightfully unexpected and educational. The plot follows a family's adventure after discovering a bit of magic. I tend to be attracted to books with magic in it, but admitted do not typically enjoy historical fiction. I find that it can be a bit dry and slow-paced at times. However, with Daufuskie Island, I found myself pulled deeper into the plot because of the historical twists.

In addition to the unforeseen plot, I really enjoyed how the author (spoiler alert) plays with the timeline and crafts the characters' interactions when they cross through time. It creates a deeper layer not typically found in beach reads. In fact, the characters' interactions in and out of the traditional timeline are what made the plot gripping for me.

In sum, if you're looking for a light summer read appropriate for anyone 13 years and older, I think this hits the spot. Daufuskie Island infuses magic into the story, adds a dollop of drama and action, and sprinkles on hope for good measure. It's sure to entertain and make you smile. At least it did with me )
This very thoughtful, exciting and different book combined fantasy with history and mystery. It appeared to have been written with a vocabulary that any middle schooler would have found easily understood, yet it did not feel as if it had been "dumbed down " or simplified. The behavior of the characters didn't include actions that would make a grandma hide the book from the grandkids. It would actually be a good book for a family read and discussion. The characters came across as being very human--sometimes noble and sometimes just jerks.. I look forward to future books from this author.

Like many folks, I have a less than admirable grasp of geography. Midway through reading the book, I stopped and looked up Daufuskie Island on a map of South Carolina . The map helped me see how this little island played such an interesting role in history and how it provided the framework for this amazing story.
What an outstanding freshman work by the author. In the spirit of the old film Swiss Family Robinson a young family is tested by a challenging adventure, but this one has magic and time travel...so the more modern fans of fantasy shouldn't be disappointed. The plot is wonderfully interwoven, and you feel the fear and wonderment of ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances.
I spent years practicing entertainment law, and I have to say this story has Disney written all over it. I hope one day it's turned into a movie. It would be the type of family fare many say there needs to be more of, and people of every age could appreciate.
